(Van) Batenburg family

The mutual relationships between the collators in the (Van) Batenburg family, originating from Gelderland, The Netherlands

(genealogy Van Basten Batenburg and Batenburg from Groenlo, elaborated up to and including generation VIII)

The Van Batenborgh family, later Batenburg and Van Basten Batenburg, owned estates in the Achterhoek in Gelderland until the end of the 19th century. Depending on the war circumstances in the 17th century, people moved – temporarily or permanently – to safer areas: Groenlo within the fortress. Or to Amsterdam in the 18th and 19th centuries for economic reasons, whereby they retained their houses in Groenlo. The earliest mentions date from the beginning of the 17th century. Members of this family can mainly be found in the liberal professions*: lawyers, doctors and merchants.

The collatorship of the Vicarie continued to go to the eldest and closest in blood.

The ius patronatus – the right to appoint a collator – was inherited in this family in the 18th century. According to the deed of foundation from 1501, the patronage right of the vicarie went to the eldest and closest blood relative of the founder. The overview below shows that this requirement of succession is still followed today (see the blue texts).

Kaart van de omgeving van Groenlo, 1741
Map of the surroundings of Groenlo in teh Netherlands. The Lordship of Borculo and Lichtenvoorde. The residential area of the Van Batenborgh family until the 19th century. Detailed map of the quarter of Zutphen, by J. Keizer from 1741. In the south lies the Lordship of Lichtenvoorde and the Lordship of Borculo and in the west the landdrostambt Zutphen.

First mention in wartime in 17th century Borculo

The town of Groenlo is surrounded by the lordships of Borculo and Lichtenvoorde, and to the south of that was the lordship of Bredevoort. An important change took place in the fortified towns of Borculo and Groenlo in the period 1665-1674.

In 1665, the Prince-Bishop of the the diocese of Münster, Bernard von Galen, occupied the town and castle of Borculo during the First Münster War, until the peace in 1666.

In the disastrous year of 1672, the city came back into the hands of the Prince-Bishop of Münster and freedom of religion was also restored. The Siege of Grol in 1672 was part of the invasion of the Republic by the united armies of France, England, the Diocese of Cologne and the Diocese of Münster. The Republic of the Seven United Netherlands made peace with Münster on 11 April 1674, after which the second Münster War came to an end and the troops of Bernard von Galen left the city again.

In these turbulent times, in 1671**, a Henrick van Baetenborgh is first mentioned in the lordship of Borculo, where he apparently had family living. It is therefore plausible that he and his wife and their 4 young children came from elsewhere. He may have been a military from one of the other fortified towns such as Ravenstein, Grave or Batenburg in Gelderland. Or from one of the Rhine forts of the Klevese barrier, such as Rheinberg, in present-day Germany. And he may have met his wife in Groenlo.

From the Memorial journal and ledger from 1844 of J.H.A. van Basten Batenburg (1793-1851) it appears that he was not only a physician, but also, from Lichtenvoorde, traded in goods such as sugar, coffee and rye. He transported these, among other things, by his own ship from and to Suriname, called the Juffrouw Helena. He and his son Bernard invested the profits from this in less risky objects by purchasing estates and farms, mainly in the Achterhoek.

Featured: Active in politics for the Roman Catholic State Party

At the end of the 19th century (from 1894) four Van Basten Batenburg brothers were simultaneously active in national politics and provincial politics in the provinces Gelderland and Limburg in the Netherlands.

Dr. Herman Schaepman had been a member of the House of Representatives of the Nederlands since 1880. He was one of the first Catholics to take a seat in parliament and developed into the great leader of the Catholics at the end of the nineteenth century.

At that time, four Catholic brothers from Lichtenvoorde (Gelderland) studied in Utrecht and undoubtedly laid the foundation for their political network there, also as members of the Utrecht Student Corps.

They had already been made politically aware by their father Bernard van Basten Batenburg (1821-1877) who, besides being a merchant, was also a member of the municipal council and alderman (1865-1871) of Lichtenvoorde and their uncle Jan van Basten Batenburg (1829-1886) who, besides being a textile manufacturer, was also mayor of Lichtenvoorde (1871-1886) and a member of the Provincial States of Gelderland (1868-1874). Jan was married to Johanna Frederika Schaepman, second cousin of the priest and politician Herman Schaepman.

After a few Catholics had founded a General League of Roman Catholic Electoral Associations in June 1887 and the papal encyclical ‘Rerum Novarum’ from 1891 laid the foundation for the party’s social policy, the brothers from Lichtenvoorde also became politically active. These four wealthy Gelderland industrialists later also joined the General League of Roman Catholic Electoral Associations, the forerunner of the RKSP.

The four Van Basten Batenburg brothers and the political positions they held were:

  • Leonard van Basten Batenburg (1864-1949) was municipal secretary (1889-1894) and mayor (1894-1914) of Lichtenvoorde, member of the Provincial Council (1898-1927) and member of the Provincial Executive of the States of Gelderland (1914-1922).
  • Mr Willem Basten Batenburg (1862 -1936) was a member of the House of Representatives (1894-1901) and a member of the Senate (1901-1903, 1907-1923).

Partly in connection with the establishment of N.V. Tiglia, a steammachine factory for clay products on the Maas, the other two brothers moved to Tegelen and also became politically active there:

  • Carel van Basten Batenburg (1860-1922) was a member of the municipal council and alderman (1894-1909), and later mayor of Tegelen (1906-1922)
  • Mr. Henri van Basten Batenburg (1858-1901) was a member of the Provincial States 1894-1915 and a member of the Provincial Executive (1901-1915) of Limburg.
